Mangum Municipal Golf Course
The Mangum Municipal Golf Course, which was once Ponder Field Airport, began as a primitive sand greens course in the 1960’s. In 1971 the course was upgraded through a recreational grant by building nine new greens, installing a watering system on the greens and building a clubhouse. Over time, a driving range, putting green and a watering system for the fairways have been added.
This outstanding southwestern dry land type course is spread over eighty acres on the quiet edge of the city. In the background you can view the Wichita Mountain Range, the oldest mountain range in North America.
The course was built around the cherished Mimosa tree, the oldest tree on the course, located near green #9. The fairways are lined with a variety of Pine, Cedar, Poplar, Maple and other hard wood trees which help with the wind. Other challenges consist of sand traps and a pond.
Since July of 2021, the Golf Course has been managed by the Mangum Public Schools through an interlocal cooperative agreement. The City provides the facilities, course, and water, and the School District provides the workforce to maintain and operate the course.
